One thing people do and everyone should do (I believe) in Dahab is to dive or learn to dive. There are two reasons: 1) Dahab offers the cheapest Scuba Diving lessons and guided dives in the world. 2) There are many options for dive sites and they are fairly accessible. The reason I think everyone should try is because everyone will have fun doing this once you get some basics.
I spent my first three days in Dahab snorkling with Frank and Fransoir and shopping for Scuba Diving lessons.I finally took 3-day open water lessons offered by Diver's House. The biggest pain about this sport is to get yourself ready for water, which includes checking on several equipments and putting on your tight wetsuit and other accessories in 40'C degree and carrying on a big tank and a 5 pound weight etc. It was quite frightening in the beginning. Once you make through the first day, you will eventually get through the 2nd day and the 3rd day. Once you get comfortable about moving around in the deep ocean, you find yourself bounce up and down. That's because you are not controlling buoyancy well. One can learn the basics in 3 days yet it takes a good amount of dives to really understand how buoyancy control works!
I was honored for PADI open water licence after three days of lessons! To celebrate, I bought myself a handcraft bracelet as a prize. Next day I took my first guided scuba diving tour at Garden Rock with a German dive coach. I ran out of my air 20 minutes before others (30 minutes Vs. 50 minutes) due to poor control of buoyancy. The ocean is the same ocean. If you control better, you will enjoy more and see more. Doesn't it make sense else where?
