Something about Nairobi II
I visited Nairobi National Museum at Westlands. The museum has a good range of cultur
al, geological and natural-history exhibits, among which, the colorful Maasai culture holds a key element. After the Museum visit, I decided to check out the expat-dominated suburb of Westlands. On the way, I met a local woman who was on her way to meet with a friend for a potential job opportunity. While we walked together, she told me she's out of work for a while and desperately looking for a job to support her children. She was very much hopeful I could help her launch something. I have heard about Kibera Slum -the biggest slum in Kenya is right on an outskirt of Nairobi. I have also realized Nairobi is really an expensive city to live in. My visit to Westlands somehow convinced me again how unaffordable this city is for most of locals. Westlands might not be a typical of Nairobi for it's the most upmarket district. My one-day expenditure in Nairobi and Westlands on basic items including food and taxi ran around 10,000 shillings ($13) compared with a wide range of local incomes from as low as 3,000 shillings to middle class about 30,000 shillings a month. The relation is striking!
