Mombasa

Indian ocean coast has a distinct culture. The culture is Arab-Swahilis. People are mainly African Muslim. Arriving in Mombasa, I first went to see an Indian doctor to get the bites checked. It turned out that I was bitten by both fleas and bed bugs.
Mombasa is another hustle and bustle city with coast breeze. Walking around in the busy bus terminal area for bus information, I soon noticed that locals are more aggressive than else where in Kenya. Some of them stalked me along the way or shouted at me some nonsense. I would have enjoyed more the local markets and food stalls if I was let alone.
I stayed at Mombasa for two full days. I went to "North Coast" in the morning and old town. Muslim Ramadan just started. All the restaurants were closed during the day. After having a mediocre Byran Rice dish at an Indian restaurant and some ice cream, I made my way to the Indian Ocean and found myself some nice peace on the North Coast beach (or Tomo Kenyatta beach). The sea water heals my wound and calms me down. I got a sense of comfort on the beach. I looked forward to relaxing and resting more at an even smaller beach town - Lamu. Kids were playing in the water. Muslim women soaked in the water on the shore with full covered clothes on.
In the evening I headed to old town and Port Jesus. Mombasa's old t

own is an interesting area to wander around with the same character of coastal East African architecture and cobbled street. As attractive as the architecture seems to me, the men in old town were hustlers. They are aggressive and creepy. I was not feeling very comfortable walking around alone in the area. I roamed into a local restaurant called Island Dish and joined a bunch of hungry locals for a big Swahilis meal. It's Ramadan meal for them.
