I tend to get a sort of romantic sentiment about my travel destinies from a movie or book. Sometimes the sentiment can grow into a motive for my travel. The movie "Out of Africa" and Karen Blixen are part of the reasons for me to travel alone to this part of the world. I know I have to visit her farmhouse. Karen Blixen, author of "Out of Africa" had lived in this lovely farmhouse between 1914 and 1931. After her husband left her, the Danish woman had lived alone in this farmhouse taking care of their coffee farm. The movie "Out of Africa" was not really filmed on this site, instead on a different site nearby. It was a hot sunny morning. I walked through her bedrooms, living room, office, kitchen, dinning room, corridor and a little garden. Her photos (she is a lovely woman), books, Safari uniforms, personal items are placed around the house. I took my time and experienced the vicarious thrills of her life in this lovely farmhouse as well as the lonely moments and the pain of losing her lover. This Danish woman from last century was a writer, a traveler, a manager, a lover and a loner. Ultimately she was a compassionate and passionate person with a rich mind and beautiful stories to tell. She was my reason to be there in that afternoon. I had a great time with her. Just me and her....
